Smart categories: collections that follow your catalogue
Select new and discounted products by rule instead of maintaining every list by hand. How to configure a smart category and check the result.
When selection can be automatic
A New arrivals collection gets out of date when you add products to the catalogue but forget to update the collection. A smart category connects selection to a rule: you choose what to select and how many products to display.
Use a manual category for a specific selection, such as gifts for a particular occasion. Use a smart one when an available rule expresses the purpose of the collection.
Choose a rule and product count
Open the category and choose a smart category in the Basics section. Rules include newest, best sellers, on sale and biggest discount. Set the number of products to display, then save.
Start with a clear purpose: this is where customers see new arrivals. The category name should describe the actual selection. Do not call a list Best sellers if its rule selects the newest products.
Check what made it into the collection
Open the category page in the shop. Review the names, prices and images. If the result does not match your expectations, check the rule and product data before changing the layout.
For a smart category, the Products tab is not for adding items manually. Selection follows the rule and does not use manual assignments. The category list identifies it as a smart category; check its actual contents on the public page.
Selection and campaigns are separate settings
The category answers which products to show. A campaign determines a discount according to its own settings. Creating a smart category does not by itself promise a new promotional price.
Before sharing the link, check several product pages and their prices. To feature the category on the homepage, add it through Content → Homepage. Creating a category and placing it there are separate steps.
