Abandoned carts: how to set up useful reminders

Up to three emails, a return to the cart and a recovery report. How to configure the sequence in ZweiHost and when to offer a discount.

Start with the purpose of the reminder

A full cart is not necessarily a rejection. The shopper may have been interrupted, may be comparing options or may have a delivery question. The first email should help them continue: show the products, give them a clear link back to the cart and explain how to contact the shop.

Avoid invented urgency and promises that stock has been reserved. If the problem is unclear delivery information or a missing product detail, fix the page; an email alone will not solve it.

Configure the sequence in ZweiHost

The email settings contain three separate abandoned-cart templates. Each has its own copy, delay and toggle. By default, the first reminder follows after 60 minutes, the second 24 hours after the first, and the third 72 hours after the second.

The delays are between steps, not three deadlines measured from leaving the shop. Disabling the second step also disables the third. The email button restores the cart so the shopper does not have to find the products again.

Decide when a discount makes sense

You can add a promotion code to the copy or use a personal one-time code. With automated codes, you choose which reminders include it; the default is only the third. This keeps the first contact a useful reminder rather than an immediate markdown.

Before enabling an incentive, check your margin and the promotion conditions. Compare recovered orders with the discount you gave, rather than judging the campaign only by the number of emails sent.

Check consent and results

Reminders require an email address and marketing consent. The sequence stops when an order is completed, and every email includes an unsubscribe link. Opting out of these reminders is respected independently of the newsletter.

Use Reports → Abandoned carts to review recovery status. Start with clear copy and check the settings with a test scenario. Change one thing at a time - copy, delay or incentive - so you can understand what helped.

Frequently asked questions

Does every visitor receive a reminder?

No. An email address and marketing consent are required; adding a product alone is not enough.

Are three emails mandatory?

No. You can use a shorter sequence. Disabling a step also stops the steps after it.
